La Savonnerie Fer à Cheval

Founded in 1856, Fer à Cheval is Marseille's oldest and largest soap factory, and lof the very last in France to perpetuate the age-old craft of making savon de Marseille under the expert eye of its master soap-makers.
For over 160 years, the soap factory has continued to make this cult product with tradition, meticulousness and passion, according to the recipe certified by Colbert' lEdict of 1688 and confirmed by Napoleon Bonaparte's decree of 1812, which has made it world-renowned.
We are at the very source of the product, passing on this know-how from generation to generation, to the point where we are now a Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) and hold the Qualité Tourisme and Origine France Garantie labels for ancestral know-how Made in France.
Our soap factory is listed as a Historic Monument, lthe Château d'IF, the Cité Radieuse and Fort Saint Jean. In Marseille, only 90 monuments llisted, and Fer à Cheval is the only soap factory.
From a historical point of view, our factory is of great interest as a heritage site, bearing witness to ltraditional activity of lMarseille soap industry in the 19th century.
